Merlot has a nice, warm atmosphere in contemporary style, but with the requisite throwback delightful French posters of a past era decorating the walls. The service was consistently good. We were however, a bit disappointed in our dishes - salmon and mussels. The former, described as "pan seared," was not seared; the lemon-butter sauce was too tart. The cabbage was blah and overcooked. The mussels lacked the garlicky-buttery flavour of authentic bistro moules; the accompanying single slice of bread was soft, not crusty, and not fresh. The accompanying fries were dry and not crispy - truly disappointing. Our creme brulee dessert was made to perfection. Finally, our French 70 cocktail was too tart. Would we return to Merlot for another try? Possibly, but it's not high on our list.
Had a great first visit here with a friend a couple of weeks’ back. We were only able to get a pair of bar seats, but the barkeep (Eric) who was serving us was very informative and helpful when it came to offering insights and suggestions about menu items, including drink pairings. The bread, like the bread at most French restaurants, is absolutely delectable. If I’m ever to get fat, let it be by a truckload of those loaves, please. The camembert fondue appetizer and steak frites main that I had were excellent, and they paired well with the bar’s signature Merlot Martini. Of course, a nice red would have arguably paired better, but it was a good match if you’re looking for something less dry and with a kick of personality. Will definitely be stopping by again in the future!
I had arranged to meet a date at Bramble Gastropub on Friday, but it was closed for a private event. A note on the door recommended trying Merlot instead so we walked over. The ambience was pretty nice and we were sat at a table in under 5mins. Our server Chad introduced himself to us and got us started on a round of drinks. He comes back to ask for food, I look at my date and she indicates that she’s not hungry. So I look at Chad and say, “Would it be alright if we just did drinks?” Chad: So long as you pay for them. Me (trying to make the situation lighter): Haha, yes that’s the hope. Chad: Oh don’t worry I’m a marathon runner, so if you decide to dine and dash, you won’t get too far. Personally felt that conversation was not necessary and in very poor taste - the date agreed. Needless to say that we finished the one drink and left, never to recommend this place to anyone, and I doubt I’ll be returning anytime soon. *** Edit: Owners response: I don’t mean to be facetious, but is this review a dry joke in response to Chad’s? My response to owner: Appreciate the humour, but if I wanted to go with a dry joke, I’d likely try your steak. Owner: Had you actually ordered the steak, it would’ve been wetter than your date. Me: Thank you for the classy response. My work here is done!
Sat at the bar tonight and had excellent service from Eric. We had a few bad experiences at this restaurant last summer but we thought we would give it another chance. They did not disappoint. Looks like they have the food problems sorted out.
So great, especially now that our local restauranteur has taken over another great spot. Good food, great ambiance. Reasonable prices and great selection. Highly recommend if you have not been. You'll become a regular!
Shout out to Pablo for such a warm service. My husband and in-laws are so happy as we were served with such fun and friendly staff. We would love to be served by Pablo again! Always awesome staff, food and vibe. It was our third or fourth time in this restaurant and can’t wait to try the rest of the menu! I wish they still have the bone marrow though! Great wine selection. Top notch all in all!
Great atmosphere & ideal location on Bloor. The rooftop patio is super nice, especially on a warm evening. Our food was delicious but the service sucked. Sad actually because service is just as important as taste & ambience. We were there Saturday July 12. Reservation was at 8 pm and we sat on the rooftop.
